My grandfather would have been proud. His name was Louis J. Chartier. He founded Newport Roofing Co. in the 1930's. If it were not for him and his high quality standards, I would not be performing traditional ( slate )roofing techniques today. This picture shows replacement of a custom made copper pipe flashing on a slate roof in Barrington RI.
As I repair leaks on this gravel surfaced, multiple ply asphalt built-up roof (aka tar and gravel) on a historic flat roof building in downtown Bristol RI, I wonder if my grandfather's crew installed the roof and copper work.
Formerly, I was vice president of a larger local roofing company; as well as Rhode Island representative for a fortune 500 roof materials manufacturer. I have many years of experience in all types of residential and commercial roofing. I first began roofing in 1979, and since then I have never had a customer dispute. I understand and care about people and roof problems. I have an extremely solid roofing foundation, and hands on experience in all types roofing and flashing; repairs and replacement. Due to many years of solving roof problems, I understand why new and old roofs leak and the types of mistakes typically made by typical roofing crews. My experience combined with my strong moral and ethical values, allows me to make quality agreements with customers; and then deliver and exceed customer's expectations. This is why, over my entire career, every single customer has paid every penny of their bill with absolutely no exceptions. I do right by people and they do right by me. At the ripe age of 50, I am still connected with the roofing process because I still work physically on the roof all week. Few people have my hands on experience. If you are looking for a fast, cheap roof, you are in the wrong place. But if you are looking for possibly the best roofer in the state and possibly the best roofer in New England, you are in the right place. References available.
Where it all began, first truck and one of "Integrity's" first rubber roof jobs with white cedar siding, chimney flashings and a gutter helmet in Touisset, Warren, RI. (Approx. June, 1999) I got heat stroke one day on that job.
Alex's days with Tremco, the commercial roofing division of B.F. Goodrich at that time approximately 1995 inspecting a leaking commercial tar and gravel roof for Narragansett Electric in Providence, RI Notice the tie under the coveralls. Cant get the nice clothes dirty. This is a true "coal tar pitch" built-up roof.
Alex in his early twenties around 1986 atop an octagonal roof cupola in Marion Ma. See the large copper ship weathervane. Bird roof shingles, White Cedar extras siding, windows, and our first Carlisle .045 reinforced rubber membrane roof. This was a very long time ago.
This one was early 1987 in downtown Stamford Ct.; I was foreman on my first high rise roof replacement approximately 220 feet in the air. The 30 inch wide balconies were tough but I did each and every one of them myself. The roof was a loose laid Durolast heat welded modified reinforced thermoplastic pvc membrane; mechanically attached to a flexicore concrete deck. One unique challenge was the fact that I had to stay in the same hotel rooms with the men, while running the job.
While we do specialize in roofing, once my customers get to know me, they ask me to do other types of projects, such as this new window in the Bristol Highlands, East Bay RI. A completely new window, trim and siding with interior trim because the old window sill was rotten and causing water to leak at the window sill and cause staining at the ceiling below. We installed a new sloped cap and new 30lb. felt splines to flash the new red cedar trim. Once painted, you couldn't even tell that a project had been performed.
Mike's expert carpentry puts the finishing touches on the interior of this new window in the Bristol highlands in 2010. The old window was leaking, rotten and drafty. We had to perform the removal and installation without disturbing the bathroom wall tile, or else the project would have cost much more. This customer did not want a "replacement window" on the old sill, he wanted an entirely new window with all new exterior flashing components rather than new sash in the same old window opening. Such a proper installation takes more time but eliminates risk of future draftiness and leakage. Now-a-days, shotty contractors are installing new replacement windows over old rotten sills causing problems and great expense for homeowners.
The photo to the left depicts major rafter damage, rot, bugs, and a great expense for the owner because a roof was installed with inadequate roof ventilation. This home owner, in Warren RI, unfortunately received a very expensive lesson on the importance of continuous roof ventilation as well as the need for a continuous ceiling to avoid roof condensation build-up, bugs, and rot.

Occasionally, one of my long term customers will convince me to do a larger renovation. Jobs like this are typically born of trust only, because competitive bidding can often be contrary to quality work. In his case, my long time customer in the Touisset section of Warren RI had me install new casement windows, white cedar siding, red cedar sills, straighten the walls involving interior finish carpentry and drywall. I did the entire project myself which was quite enjoyable working directly on the waterfront for a customer I like and trust: knowing that she also trusts me. While I do not perform this involved window work often, when you live in a house on the water which gets pelted by heavy wind and rain, there are benefits to having a waterproofing expert install and flash your windows. I do not try to perform the job fast...I do not go slow, but I make sure that the windows are flashed perfectly because when on the water, here is no room for water infiltration. Eventually, water infiltration will cause bugs and rot. People performing this type of work on a production basis, are forced to rely on less skilled, younger more inexpensive workers who really do not understand why they are doing what they are doing. For example, the lesser experienced worker will often produce much work, however windows with caps that have no slope, will eventually have a problem. It only takes a little longer to cap the window with heavy duty sheet metal with slope to the outer side so that the wall water does not run behind the siding. Often, the inexperienced worker will start off with sloped caps, but once he jams a cedar shingle hard down on the thin metal, the cap buckles, loses its slope, and loses its coverage. The end result might appear to be something worth paying for, but poor quality can be mere "junk" after a few years of water damage.
This picture shows a successful mill tower project that I ran many years ago in Coventry Rhode Island. We installed Grand Manor roof shingles as well as a Durolast roof on the flat roof at the top. The removals included 4 layers of roof shingles. The picture to the left shows Alex standing at the top of the mill tower. The owner hired us because the tower was near and dear to his heart and unfortunately he passed away during the roofing project.
